through the night to clear a stretch of new york's long island expressway and have city-bound lanes open this morning for rush hour. the l.i.e. is the main way into the city from long island. so we are all over this big digout. indra petersons is in long island, george howell is in hamden, connecticut. we begin in boston where the big concern is power outages, how to get all of those folks out. indra, good morning. >> good morning. yeah, today it is also about getting back to normal. we still have 120,000 people this morning without power. temperatures are cold. tons of snow is on the ground. huge heaps of snow. today we have a snow emergency and school is still closed as the city takes one more day to clean out the snow. what you mentioned earlier is a weather charge today. a warm front is pushing through. highs will be in the mid 40s. a lot of the snow is expected to melt. before we get there, we will talk about more snow, several inches is possible and even freezing rain. so everyone is trying to get to work this morning. not seeing too much out here. it looks like people are listenin

they believed they stopped at those intersections. so here's what's going on. the city of rockville changed camera vendors. changed the cameras and what they consider to be a red light violation. let's show you video we shot. here's what it looks like. the cameras will flash if the driver crosses the white stop line. also videotaped drivers making right turns on red but they'll get a ticket if they don't come to a complete stop before making the turn. westbound at research. 5087 tickets in 2012. only 1043 in in 2011. 4087 in 2012. only 756 last year . this is a brand new camera. it only began operating in august. 3981 in five months. here's what aaa had to say about that. >> in one year we saw the numbers of red light runners go from 8600 to 18,000 just shy of 18,000. now, what changed? the vendor and the methodology. doesn't mean that suddenly we have a whole rash of drivers in rockville that think it's all right to run red lights. there was no change in drivers. >> reporter: now aaa says using those stop lines as a trigger for red light violations may be contrary to guidelines that the fe

was standing with friends in the city park there. her death has brought new attention to chicago's sky high murder rate. michelle obama attended the funeral. she met privately with the victim's family and friends. the two people being questioned in the pendleton case, police in chicago say no questions have been filed so far. >>> a massive man hunt continues today in california. he's accused of killing 3 people. a $1 million reward is being offered for the arrest of christopher dorner who is considered 5r78d and extremely dangerous. miguel almaguer reports. >>> this is christopher dorner dumping a gun belts, a helmet and ammunition. the surveillance video was captured across the street from a san diego police station. >> the helmet was sitting right up top and the magazine and the belt was hidden under the boxes. >> reporter: the former cop now fugitive accused of killing three and wounding two others was fired from the lapd after making false complaints about his training officer. but now the los angeles police chief says a week after the killing spree began he'll reopen dorner's case. >>

in this country. let's start off our coverage with deb feyerick in st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, the center of the american catholic tradition here. deb, what are you hearing this morning? what a shocker. >> reporter: it's fascinating because the resignation took many here by surprise. we spoke just a short time ago with the archbishop of new york, cardinal timothy dolan, and he says he was startled when he heard the news. he said there have been rumors at various points that pope benedict xvi would be stepping down, but when the formal word came that he was resigning, it took the entire diocese, certainly by surprise. now, we did speak to him a little bit earlier. he said, you know, pope benedict understood that, in fact, he was in frail health, that even back in 2005, when his name came up for consideration to become the pope, he mentioned that he was getting older. he is going to be 86 years old in the next two months. and so he understood that. and being pope is a very grueling kind of job, the cardinal said. people are always trying to get near you, trying to jostle, trying

to evacuate this lowe's in the city of north ridge on sunday. still, no sign of the suspected killer and police are banning together to offer an incentive. >> collectively, this group, led my my office, is posting a reward of $1 million for information that will lead to mr. dorner's capture. >> reporter: police say the reward is high because the stakes are so high. >> every day that dorner is loose, the likelihood of an attack on either a uniformed police officer or a family of a police officer is likely. >> reporter: police suspect the 33-year-old fugitive and a week-long reign of terror that left three people dead. he said the lapd was corrupt and racist and vowed war against former colleagues and their families. the police chief is reopening the 2007 case that resulted in dorner being fired. >> if there is anything to what he says in his manifesto, we'll deal with it and deal with it publicly. >> reporter: police found camping gear in his burned out pickup truck. dorner is former military. a skilled marksman and familiar with law enforcement tactics and techniques. the 34-year-old

. blizzard dumped a staggering 40 inches of snow in hamden, connecticut. so much snow, the city's mayor says many roads there are still blocked today, at least nine deaths blamed on the blizzard, and as of late yesterday, 270,000 utility customers still in the dark. now, another slippery threat in the east and south. not out of danger zone. alexandra steele tracking the threat coming in this morning. >> good morning, john. danbury, connecticut, seeing ice. a mix of ice and snow. all snow in pitsfield, mass. the good news, it will all move through by noon today. freezing rain advisories, winter weather advisories, done by the afternoon. yesterday, 15 reports of tornadoes in the south in mississippi, of course, that awful scenario the powerful tornado. february in mississippi on average, they see about eight tornadoes during the month. not out qwest, but look at this. a rain tree. today, the throat not so much isolated tornado but heavy rain. yesterday and wednesday right along i-10, i-20 corridor, dallas to atlanta. and there is the potential for three to five inches of rain. not moving anywh
